Portfolio Management Team

Marvin P. Bush, Co-Founder and Managing Partner
Mr. Bush co-founded Winston Partners in December 1993. His prior investment experience includes positions held with Moseley, Hallgarten, Estabrook and Weeden, Inc., Shearson Lehman Brothers, Inc., and John Stewart Darrell & Company. Mr. Bush is a member of the Board of Directors and is the chair of the Finance and Investment Committee of the George W. Bush Presidential Library Foundation. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of Kerrco, Inc. and the Investment Committee of Virginia Theological Seminary. He is a past member of the Board of Managers of the University of Virginia Alumni Association and the Board of the College Foundation of the University of Virginia. Mr. Bush earned his BA from the University of Virginia.

Jonathan D. Scanlon, CFA, Managing Partner
Mr. Scanlon is co-portfolio manager and oversees the investment process of Winston Partners. Prior to joining the firm in April 2002, Mr. Scanlon worked for Duke Management Company, where he led the team managing all of Duke University’s investments in hedge funds and traditional public equity strategies. Previously, he was with Merck & Co., Inc. for several years, including two years in Merck’s Pension Investments Group. He began his career at Mellon Bank. Mr. Scanlon received an MBA from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University and a BA from the University of Pittsburgh, where he graduated magna cum laude.

Research Team

J. Bryan Watts, CFA, Partner and Director of Research
Mr. Watts oversees the research process for Winston’s hedge fund vehicles. Prior to joining the firm in July 2003, Mr. Watts worked at Cambridge Associates for five years, including three years in Cambridge’s hedge fund research group, where he was most recently a Research Consultant. He also worked for Horizon Bank of Virginia as a Credit Analyst. Mr. Watts received an MBA with High Distinction from the University of Michigan and a BS in Business from Virginia Tech.

Jayson S. Ward, CFA, Partner
Mr. Ward focuses on research for Winston’s hedge fund vehicles. Prior to joining the firm in January 2001, Mr. Ward worked for a start-up securitized lending firm for several years, prior to which he was a Trader on the International Fixed Income desk at Lehman Brothers. He has also worked for a start-up software company as a sales manager and as a multinational underwriter for CIGNA Worldwide, Inc. Mr. Ward received a BA from the University of Richmond and an MBA from Vanderbilt University.

Anthony J. Rettig, CFA, Principal
Mr. Rettig focuses on research for Winston’s funds. Prior to joining the firm in March 2011, Mr. Rettig spent nearly five years as an Investment Analyst at Lane Five Capital Management, where he assisted in founding the firm and then focused on the research and selection of long and short equities for the firm’s funds. Prior to joining Lane Five, Mr. Rettig was an Investment Analyst at another long/short equity firm, Matador Capital Management. He began his career in the Equity Research Department at Raymond James & Associates. Mr. Rettig received a BS from the University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce and an MBA from UVa's Darden School of Business, where he received a Faculty Award for Academic Excellence. 

Elizabeth Oldach Anderson, CFA, Principal
Ms. Anderson focuses on research for Winston’s hedge fund vehicles. Prior to joining the firm in October 2005, Ms. Anderson was an Investment Analyst at Georgetown University’s Investment Office, where she focused on hedge funds, private equity and real assets. Previously, Ms. Anderson was an Investment Analyst at Duke Management Company (Duke University) focused primarily on hedge fund and long-only equity investments. Ms. Anderson received a BS with Distinction from the University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce.

Client Service & Marketing Team

St. Julian O. Pollard, Partner
Mr. Pollard focuses on client service and marketing for Winston’s hedge fund products. Prior to joining the firm in March 2006, Mr. Pollard worked in a similar capacity as a Vice President at Silvercrest Asset Management. From 1996 to 2003, he was with the asset management divisions of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette and its successor, Credit Suisse, where he held various client service and marketing roles, most recently as Vice President. Mr. Pollard received a BA from the University of Virginia.

Derrick G. Preuss, Principal

Mr. Preuss joined the firm in May 2011 and focuses on marketing and client service for Winston’s hedge fund products. From December 2009 to April 2011, Mr. Preuss was a Vice President in prime brokerage sales at Merlin Securities, a prime brokerage solutions provider in New York. Prior to Merlin, Mr. Preuss spent five years at Merrill Lynch & Co. on the US prime brokerage sales and marketing team, where he was responsible for originating financing, execution, and structured product relationships with hedge fund managers globally. Mr. Preuss earned his BA in Economics from the University of Virginia.

Kara A. Biehl, Associate
Ms. Biehl focuses on client service and marketing for Winston’s hedge fund products. Prior to joining the firm in October 2010, Ms. Biehl was a Marketing and Client Service Associate at Fox Asset Management, LLC in Red Bank, NJ. Prior to joining Fox, Ms. Biehl managed continuing education events at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and was a publicity assistant for Henry Holt & Co. in New York. She received a BS from New York University.

Finance Team

William O. Birchfield, III, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Compliance Officer and Partner
Mr. Birchfield oversees the financial, accounting, and operational aspects of the firm and is also responsible for managing Winston's Operational Due Diligence effort. Prior to joining the firm in September 2009, Mr. Birchfield was the Chief Financial Officer, Chief Operating Officer and a Founder of Ergates Capital Management, LLC, a long/short equity hedge fund manager in Jacksonville, Florida, from 2004 to 2009. Previously he was the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer of Water Street Capital Inc., a long/short equity manager in Jacksonville. Prior to Water Street, Mr. Birchfield was the CFO of Redon, Inc., a privately-held intermodal trailer leasing company. Previously, he spent three years as an auditor and tax senior with Price Waterhouse. Mr. Birchfield received his BS in Accounting from Washington & Lee University and his Masters in Accountancy from the University of Florida. He passed the Certified Public Accountant exam in 1992.

Kristina S. Inglis, Controller
Ms. Inglis is responsible for managing the accounting, financial reporting and tax compliance for Winston and its funds. Prior to joining the firm in October 2007, she was Assistant Controller at Ridgefield Capital, a commodities hedge fund.  She also worked for Zeus Capital, a hedge fund, as the Assistant Controller.  From 2000 through 2004, Ms. Inglis was an Associate Director at UBS Investment Bank responsible for Operational Risk Analysis and, most recently, for managing the OTC Equity and Interest Rate Derivatives Operations team.  She received an MBA from the University of Connecticut and a BS in Finance with a minor in Accounting from Siena College.

Parul M. Blizzard, Controller
Ms. Blizzard is responsible for managing the accounting, financial reporting and tax compliance for Winston and its funds. Ms. Blizzard was with Winston from 2004 to 2006 and re-joined the firm in May 2010 to manage the implementation and maintenance of Winston’s financial accounting and reporting database (Cogency). Prior to re-joining Winston, she was a Controller with DTRI Inc., and while with Winston previously, she was an Assistant Controller responsible for accounting and financial reporting for Winston’s funds and management company. Prior to joining Winston, she was with PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP as a Senior Audit Associate in the Capital Markets industry. Ms. Blizzard received a BS from the University of Virginia.

Kelly J. Speck, Senior Accountant
Ms. Speck was with Winston from 2004 to 2007 and re-joined the firm in February 2011. She is responsible for the accounting and financial reporting for Winston’s management company and funds. Prior to joining Winston, she worked for The Mills Corporation as an Assistant Controller in Property Accounting and was with PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP as an associate in the audit division. Ms. Speck received a BBS double majoring in Accounting and Finance from Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas.  

Administration & Operations Team

Ann S. Williams, Director of Operations and Compliance
Ms. Williams focuses on Winston’s fund operations, including administration, compliance, and research. Prior to joining the firm in July 2002, Ms. Williams worked for Thayer Capital Partners, as well as Carlyle International. Ms. Williams has over 20 years of administrative experience and in-depth financial and private equity experience.

Christine A. Norton, Associate, Operations and Administration
Ms. Norton provides administrative assistance to Marvin Bush and the hedge fund team. Prior to joining Winston in March 2005, Ms. Norton worked for Number Six Software in Arlington, Virginia. Ms. Norton has over 15 years of administrative experience as well as extensive human resources and office management experience. Ms. Norton received a BA in English from the University of Maryland and, while serving in the Navy, a diploma in Chinese Mandarin from the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California.

Gayle Abrea, Office Manager
Ms. Abrea performs general duties to support office operations and facilities management and provides administrative assistance to the COO/CFO. Prior to joining the firm in April 2010, Ms. Abrea worked for Washington Council Ernst & Young as an Executive Assistant to the managing partner and several founding partners. She also worked at the Egyptian Embassy in Washington, DC as the Social Secretary to the Ambassador. Ms. Abrea has over 10 years of administrative and managerial related experience. She received a BS in Commerce (major in Management) from Assumption College.
